-Information in grey italics is uncertain-
1998
The year in which Rowland S.Howard starts a treatment regime for his heroin addiction, marries Jane Usher
and reacquaints himself with Mick Harvey [Birthday Party/Crime and the City Solution] to record an album, "Teenage Snuff Film".

Line-up #1 (Melbourne: May 1998-December 1999):
Rowland S.Howard (vocals, guitars)/ Brian Hooper (bass) and Mick Harvey (drums).

May/Aug-98
AU Melbourne-Prahran,Birdland studios and Melbourne-Richmond,Sing Sing studios. Recording sessions for the "Teenage Snuff Film" album. Engineered by James Masson (at Birdland) and Matt Voigt (at Sing Sing). Produced by Lindsay Gravina. Line-up: Rowland S.Howard (vocals, guitars)/ Brian Hooper (bass) and Mick Harvey (drums, organ, rhythm guitar), with guests: Jen Anderson (strings)/ Robin Casinader [Wreckery] (strings)/ Andrew Entsch (strings)/ Genevieve McGuckin (organ)/ Steve Boyle (drums). Andrew Entsch [King Idiot/Kim Salmon] died on 05-Dec-98 of a heroin overdose.

Early 1997, Rowland produced the Hungry Ghosts's selftitled debut album @ Birdland, with Lindsay Gravina. Early 1998, Mick and Rowland had worked with Lindsay Gravina @ Birdland on mixing The Birthday Party's "Live 1981-82" album. During July 1998 Mick Harvey tours Europe as member of the Bad Seeds.

"When I started this record, I had just gone through naltrexone [a treatment for alcohol and opioid dependency]. And what happens is that you have a flood of emotions that are repressed when you're using drugs; they just spring to life, and I was so angry when I made that record. I did all sorts of un-Rowland Howard things like trashing the studio. Not in a fit of childish pique, but because I thought something had gone disastrously wrong. I was just incredibly angry and I wrote about four of the songs while the record was being made, so it manifested itself in that way. I like to think that that is tempered by the pop songs on the record." Rowland quoted in The Age 13-Aug-99.

"[Rowland] called me up and said 'I wanna do this solo album, would you help me?' [..] Little did I expect that it would be just me and him recording all the basic tracks together. [..] Apart from 2 songs, I think, all the basic tracks are just him playing the guitar and me playing drums." Mick Harvey interviewed for "Autoluminiscent", a film by Lynn-Maree Milburn and Richard Lowenstein.

02-Apr-08 and Nov/Dec-2008
AU Melbourne-Prahran,Birdland studios. Recording sessions for "Pop Crimes". Engineered by Rob Long. Produced by Lindsay Gravina. Line-up: Rowland S.Howard (vocals, guitars)/ J.P. Shilo (aka John Brooks) (guitar, violin, bass) and Mick Harvey (drums, organ), with guest: Brian Hooper (bass). Brian Hooper was touring in Europe at the time of the recording sessions and thus was unavailable to join (most of the sessions).

"[..] We had to record it quickly so the whole thing was done in a month. [..] Well I'm just very sick, very, very unwell, so we couldn't fuck around. I contracted liver disease a while back and I've basically got liver cancer, I'm waiting for a transfer, if I don't get it things might not go so well...so...". Rowland interview (20-Oct-09) for Stuff.co.nz

" 'Pop Crimes' was really difficult because [Rowland] was really sick. It was really hard. We spent a lot of time arriving at the studio and sitting there for four hours, so after a few days I just said, Okay Rowland, Im coming at 12:30 p.m. in the car, and Ill pick you up tomorrow, just to get him into the studio, but then hed come in and hed only be able to work for a few hours and hed go home again, so JP [Shilo] and I just kept working on the album when he wasnt there as much as we could. But it got done, an album got made, so that was really fantastic and he actually got to write the last couple of songs he needed to write. It took him a while, but you know it was good to get him to do that because it could just as easily not have happened. The guy from the record label was really instrumental in it, too; he [Gerard Schlaghecke] just made the whole thing happen." Mick Harvey interviewed by Tony DuShane for The Rumpus.net (25-Aug-17).

Mick Harvey left the Bad Seeds on 21-Jan-09, after his last concert with them in Perth the day before. After the release of the "Dig, Lazarus, Dig" album in March 2008, the Bad Seeds toured Europe/UK and North America from April 2008 till end of November 2008.
