Chronology: a chronological overview of known concert dates (some with setlists and/or ads), 
dates of studio recordings, all line-ups and other trivia related to the German band Einstürzende Neubauten. 

-Information in grey italics is uncertain-

1979 The year in which the future band members first start making music together.

1979 GE Berlin-Schöneberg, Blixa Bargeld (born Christian Emmerich) finds a shop-flat in the Langenscheidtstrasse. The cellar is transformed into a rehearsal space. Blixa's former school mate N.U. Unruh (born Andrew Chudy, a.k.a. N-Dih) returns from Amsterdam (where he had studied for several years to become a piano tuner) and starts 'jamming' with Blixa in his cellar. Alex Hacke (then 14) is also present at these sessions. At this place Blixa Bargeld and N.U. Unruh, together with Susä Hobeck and Bettina Köster, record a tape which is later released on the Eisengrau label. The cellar space is later in the year also used by Mania D. for their rehearsals. Mania D. at the time were Gudrun Gut (born Gudrun Bredemann), Bettina Köster and Beate Bartel.

	1979 GE Berlin-Schöneberg,Goltzstrasse 37,Eisengrau shop-flat. Note: In June 1979 Gudrun Gut and Bettina Köster open a clothes and design shop at Goltzstrasse 37. The name Eisengrau/Irongrey is taken from the colour of the paint boxes which were left in the shop by the former tenant. The old paint boxes are used to paint the shelves. The clothes they design are mainly grey of colour. By end of 1979 the shop is transferred to Blixa, who starts selling tapes from the shop, whilst the girls keep on selling their clothes and design. Wolfgang Müller (of Tödliche Doris) uses the place to sell copies of his fanzine and the shop becomes a scene-hangout. A.o. Ben Becker, Fetish, Alex Hacke, Padeluun, etc.. show up frequently. 1980 The year in which the band is officialy founded. Recording and release of the "Für den Untergang" 7" and several live tapes. They only play a handful of live dates in Berlin with regular equipment and sound very much like a 'real' band. At the end of the year they play in Hamburg (their first concert outside of Berlin).

	Mar-80 GE Berlin-Schöneberg,Eisengrau shop Note: Rehearsing for the upcoming first concert.

	01-Apr-80 GE Berlin,Diskothek Moon Setlist: Gier (a.k.a. Tanz Debil)/ Hören-Gehört werden/ Atomarer Walzer/ Atomarer Walzer-Nach mir kommst nichts mehr/ Frishes Blut für Berlin/ Valium(). Note:* Their first concert. About 50 people attend. They perform improvised music to Super-8 films and sound very much like a 'real' band with Blixa Bargeld on vocals and guitar, Beate Bartel on bass, Gudrun Gut on Korg MS-20 synthesiser and N.U. Unruh on real drums. Gudrun & Beate were at the time also in Mania D. The concert was recorded by the band and later sold as a cassette in Blixa's 'Eisengrau' shop. All tracks are available on the "Einstürzende Neubauten (Live In Kunstkopfstereo)" cassette, except () on the "Chaos-> Sehnsucht/ Energie" cassette. 	Apr-80 GE Berlin,S.O.36 [with Alvaro] Setlist: Sendezeichen/ Für den Untergang (a.k.a. Kriegstanz)/ Gewaltige Gefühle/ Chaos - Frishes Blut für Berlin()/ Sehnsucht. Note:* Their second concert. Bettina Köster (then in Mania D.) played sax on (*). Recorded by the band and available on the "Chaos-> Sehnsucht/Energie" cassette.

	May-80 GE Release of the "Einstürzende Neubauten(Live In Kunstkopfstereo)" cassette on Eisengrau

	May-80 GE Berlin,Alex Kögler's gallerie Note: Their third concert.

	May-80 GE Berlin,Music Lab studio,recording "Für den Untergang" (for the A-side of the first 7") and "Tan-Ze-Dub" (later released on the "Bandsalat" compilation album). Engineered by Harris Johns. Gudrun Gut can no longer stand Blixa's bossing around and leaves the band.

	May-80 GE Berlin,at a jazz cellar Note: Their fourth concert. With Chrislo Haas (DAF, Liaisons Dangereuses) instead of Gudrun Gut and possibly also with Susä Hobeck (who used to be in a pre-Neubauten band with Blixa, N.U. & Bettina Köster). Beate Bartel's last concert with Neubauten. Together with Gudrun Gut she focusses on their own band Mania D.

Line-up #1b (GE, Berlin: June 1980 - April 1981): Blixa Bargeld (guitar & vocals) & N.U. Unruh (drums)

	01-Jun-80 GE Berlin,inside a pillar of the Stadtautobahn bridge,south-western part of Berlin. Blixa Bargeld and N.U. Unruh record "Stahlversion" (first 7" B-side and a version of "Für den Untergang") and the "Stahlmusik" cassette album. The space was 1.5 metres high, 5 metres in width and 50 metres in length and made out of steel. Pocket torches were used to lit the place and a Telefunken Bajazzo transistor radio was used as amplifier. The session was taped with an ordinary cassette recorder. Not to be confused with the recording of the "Stahlmusik" video at the same place, but in April 1981.

	Jun-80 GE Release of the "Chaos-> Sehnsucht/Energie" cassette on Eisengrau.

	Sep-80 GE Release of the "Für den Untergang/Stahlversion" 7" on Monogam Records.

	Sep-80 GE Berlin,Music Lab & CassettenCombinat studios,recording "Zuckendes Fleisch", "13 Löcher(Leben ist illegal)" and "(Tagesschau-)Dub" for the "Monogam Sampler" compilation album. Elisabeth Recker of Monogam Records wanted recordings of Sentimentale Jugend, which was Alexander von Borsig, but Alex also smuggled Neubauten (Blixa & N.U.) into the recording sessions.

	Oct-80 GE Release of the "Stahlmusik" cassette on Eisengrau.

	24-Nov-80 GE Berlin-Schöneberg,Rosa von Praunheim's apartment Setlist: Amongst others: Wir können nicht spielen. Note: With Alex von Borsig (born Alexander Hacke) on bass. N.U. 	Dec-80 N.U. Unruh sells his real drums (to pay the rent) and constructs his own with material stolen from building sites.

	27-Dec-80 GE Hamburg,Markthalle,Zick Zack-Neue Musik festival [with Wirtschaftswunder, Die Radierer and Abwärts and more] Setlist: Soundcheck/ Zuckendes Fleisch/ Leben ist Illegal/ (Wir sind) Gut(mit dem Kopf an die Wand)/ Musik ist Macht-Magie/ Für den Untergang. Note: Festival set up by Alfred Hilsberg (Zick Zack records label). Their first concert outside of Berlin. With Alex von Borsig (a.k.a. Alexander Hacke) joining N.U. Unruh on drums. They played after (local band) Abwärts, because they were afraid the violent punks would beat them up (like they did with the other non-Hamburg bands Wirtschaftswunder and Die Radierer). Most people had left after Abwärts. At this concert Blixa and FM Einheit (a.k.a. Frank Martin Strauss, then in Abwärts) meet for the first time. Poster: Photo of poster.



1981 The year in which FM Einheit and Mark Chung join. Recording and release of the "Kalte Sterne" EP and "Kollaps" album. Their first tour ("Die Berliner Krankheit") of Germany.

The band loaths the play (about a Hamburger youth shot dead by a shop owner), but loves the money they get for it. Despite the fact that the rehearsal space has good recording equipment, in all the time they will spend in Hamburg the band will never record. Instead they live a life a drugs and alcohol enjoying the first time they have loads of money. They frequently fly back to Berlin with the free plane tickets provided by Peter Zadek. For 1.5 years (as long as the play runs) the band would not grow artistically, although they would benefit from performing live so often. Mark Chung would invest the money earned in the incorporation of Freibank (to administer the copyrights of artists). During this period FM Einheit's daughter Amanda is born, upon which he decides to move to Bayern.
